Controller

PURPOSE:

We’re seeking an experienced accountant to oversee financial operations of the church in the role of controller. The ideal candidate will have proven industry experience as an accountant, preferably in a senior role. As a strong communicator and skilled financial analyst, you will make it your mission to streamline our budgeting, payroll, and financial reporting processes. You will create and implement financial processes/procedures, and produce thorough financial-status reports for the executive team and our trustees to help improve our operational efficiency and aid in our continued growth.

OBJECTIVES OF THE ROLE:

  • Provide comprehensive financial updates by evaluating, analyzing, and reporting appropriate data points
  • Guide financial decisions by applying church policies and procedures to current economic landscape
  • Develop, implement, and maintain financial controls and guidelines
  • Achieve budgeting goals with proper scheduling, analysis, and corrective action
  • Maximize payroll efficiency through innovative process development
  • Help develop and support short and long-term operational strategies

DAILY & MONTHLY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manage and monitor all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements as well as the requirements of private contributions, loans, and government contracts, as applicable.
  • Maintain internal control safeguards for the receipt of revenue, costs and both team and organizational budgets and actual expenditures
  • In conjunction with the senior executive pastor, establish financial and operating benchmarks, budgets, program monitoring, and reporting standards on a bi-weekly, monthly, and annual basis
  • Implement consistent accounting policies, practices, and procedures across all programs, upholding federal, state, and local legal standards by remaining knowledgeable about existing, new, and future legislation
  • Develop and enforce internal controls to maximize protection of church assets, policies, procedures, and workflow
  • Oversee the annual audit of all church financials and controls.

REQUIRED SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, accounting, or related field
  • Professional accounting certification
  • Working knowledge of finance law and regulatory standards (GAAP)
  • Strong understanding of economic and banking processes
  • Thorough understanding of Quickbooks

PREFERRED SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 5+ years experience as a senior-level accounting or finance manager
  • Strong working knowledge of detailed financial data analysis
  • Proven payroll experience, with a focus on streamlining accounting processes
  • Exemplary history of financial project management
  • Working knowledge of federal, state, and local tax compliance regulations and reporting
  • CPA highly preferred

TIME REQUIREMENTS:

The Controller position is a full-time and work hours should be in alignment with what is notated in the staff handbook. Involvement in a group and attendance in Sunday experiences are also required.

SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY:

Decisions and independent judgment are significant and have a major impact on the viability of the ministry. Self-management and self-starting action are required, although intended action should be regularly reported to the Senior Executive Pastor.

INTERPERSONAL SKILLS

Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to interact effectively with collaborators and personnel at all levels and with all levels knowledge and understanding. Professional demeanor is required at all times, including the ability to remain calm under pressure. Ability to work across the various teams in the organization is essential.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Demands of the position are primarily mental; however, individual must be comfortable sitting for long periods of time. 

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:

Up to 5% travel is required for this position.
