Matthew 15:29-16:12

Context

This passage describes events similar to other miracles of Jesus, but these take place in Gentile territory. Gentiles (non-Jews) were often actively avoided and rejected by Jewish people, but Jesus’ activity here points to God’s future invitation for all people to enter his kingdom. His comments about “the sign of Jonah” are predictive of his death and resurrection.

Questions

  1. Matthew 15:30 – Do you know anyone who doesn’t feel like they can draw close to God? Plan a conversation with someone this week to encourage them toward God’s goodness and grace.
  2. Matthew 16:1 – Have you put any demands on God? In your own words, write out a commitment of trusting in his authority and being content with what he has already done in your life.
  3. Matthew 16:12 – How do you make decisions about what teachings are true or false? Think of some new ways to have accountability for your beliefs (for example, having regular conversations with someone else about what you’re learning and praying about).
