Context

By now, Matthew has written about many events that have sparked different views about who Jesus is. Here he begins revealing Jesus with more clarity as the Messiah who would deliver God’s people not by a demonstration of strength, but as a suffering servant.

Questions

  1. Matthew 16:15 – Who is Jesus to you? How did you come to that conclusion? If you haven’t before, write out a short summary of your experience with discovering who Jesus is.
  2. Matthew 16:23 – How often do you ask God for his opinion on your attitudes and actions? List some of the things that you’re trying to solve or change right now, asking God what he thinks about each one. Write down anything you feel him saying to you.
  3. Matthew 16:25 – Can you think of anything you would be hesitant or unwilling to give up if God asked you to? Pray for a greater willingness to surrender everything to God and trust him with the progress of your life.
