Sermon Guide

Give Us Eyes to See!

June 1, 2025
Dr. Allen Holmes

It’s easy to miss what’s right in front of us. But Jesus doesn’t just help the blind man in John 9—He reveals the spiritual blindness in everyone else. This isn’t just a story about healing—it’s a story about awakening. Jesus gives sight, not just to eyes, but to hearts.

REVIEW: The Blind Man — Physical Blindness.

  • READ: John 9:1-3 “As he was passing by, he saw a man blind from birth. His disciples asked him, ‘Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?’ ‘Neither this man nor his parents sinned,’ Jesus answered. ‘This came about so that God’s works might be displayed in him.’”
  • DISCUSS: Where is Jesus inviting you to stop and truly see someone who’s hurting—even if it’s inconvenient?

REVIEW: The Disciples — Cultural Blindness.

  • READ: 2 Corinthians 4:4 “In their case, the god of this age (Satan) has blinded the minds of the unbelievers to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.”
  • DISCUSS: Where might your perspective be more shaped by culture than by Jesus? How is God inviting you to see through a gospel lens?

REVIEW: The Neighbors — Willful Blindness.

  • READ: John 9:8-12 “His neighbors and those who had seen him before as a beggar said, ‘Isn’t this the one who used to sit begging?’ Some said, ‘He’s the one.’ Others were saying, ‘No, but he looks like him.’ He kept saying, ‘I’m the one.’ So they asked him, ‘Then how were your eyes opened?’”
  • DISCUSS: Where might you be ignoring something God is clearly doing because it challenges your comfort or control?

REVIEW: The Parents — Fearful Blindness.

  • READ: Matthew 7:1-2 “Do not judge, so that you won’t be judged. For you will be judged by the same standard with which you judge others, and you will be measured by the same measure you use.”
  • DISCUSS: Is fear keeping you from following Jesus boldly or speaking the truth in love? How can the Spirit give you courage?

REVIEW: The Pharisees — Prideful Blindness.

  • READ: John 9:25 “He answered, ‘Whether he’s a sinner or not, I don’t know. One thing I do know: I was blind, and now I see!’”
  • DISCUSS: How might pride be limiting your spiritual growth or keeping you from recognizing where God is at work?

  ASK:

What else did you get from this week's sermon? What actions or next steps can you take to apply it to your life?

PRAY:
Jesus, open our eyes. We don’t want to walk through life blind—blind to You, to others, or to the truth. Thank You for seeing us, healing us, and calling us to walk in Your light. Where we’ve been blind in fear, pride, or distraction, lead us to repentance and renewal. Let us be people who see as You see. In Your name, Amen.

INVITATION TO RESPOND:
Take one intentional step this week to walk in the light of Jesus:

Pause to Notice: Who have you overlooked? Make space to see and serve them.
Use Your Weakness: Let your limitation become a witness to God’s strength.
Speak Up: Share your story of how Jesus opened your eyes.
Challenge Your Lens: Invite God to renew your mind and challenge cultural assumptions.
Worship Boldly: Reflect on your personal “I was blind, but now I see” story and thank Jesus.

Jesus didn’t just restore sight—He restored vision and purpose. This week, who will you really see?
