Advent reminds us that arrival always reveals the heart. In Matthew 2, three groups encounter the same announcement—“Jesus, the King, has come.” But their responses could not be more different. Some were indifferent, some hostile, and some worshiped. The way we respond to Jesus exposes who actually sits on the throne of our lives.

REVIEW: Indifference — Knowing about Jesus without moving toward Him

READ: John 1:11 –
“He came to his own, and his own did not receive Him.”

DISCUSS:
Where do you see signs of indifference toward Jesus in your life—areas where you know the truth but haven’t acted on it?

REVIEW: Control — Resisting Jesus because He threatens our throne

READ: Proverbs 18:1 –
“Whoever isolates himself seeks his own desire; he breaks out against all sound judgment.”

DISCUSS:
Where are you tempted to keep control? In what area are you protecting your own throne instead of surrendering to Jesus?

REVIEW: Worship — Moving toward Jesus in faith and surrender

READ: Hebrews 11:6 –
“Without faith it is impossible to please God…”

DISCUSS:
What step of faith is Jesus leading you to take? Where is He inviting you to bow low and offer Him something costly?

REVIEW: Your response reveals your King

READ: Romans 12:1 –
“Present your bodies as a living sacrifice… this is your true and proper worship.”

DISCUSS:
Which response(indifference, control, or worship) most reflects your posture toward Jesus right now?

ASK

What is the Holy Spirit revealing about your heart this Advent season? What needs to shift so Jesus is truly King?

PRAY

Jesus, You are the true and rightful King. Break our indifference, dethrone our self-rule, and draw us into worship. Give us faith to seek You, humility to bow before You, and courage to offer You our very best. Let Your peace rule in our hearts as we surrender fully to You. Amen.

INVITATION TO RESPOND

This week, take one intentional step that aligns your life with Jesus as King:

  • Turn from indifference: Choose a daily time to meet with Jesus.
  • Release control: Surrender one area where you’ve been resisting Him.
  • Choose worship: Offer Him something sacrificial—time, obedience, generosity, or repentance.
  • Seek the King: Move toward Him in faith, even if you only see one “star” of direction.
  • Walk in peace: Allow His rule to quiet your fears and lead your decisions.

Three responses. One King. Which one will shape your life this Advent?
