If God is all-powerful, why does He allow His people to suffer? In Stephen’s story, we see that persecution is not evidence of God’s absence but often proof of His work. Even as stones fell, Jesus stood in heaven, reminding us that suffering is temporary and victory in Christ is secure.

REVIEW: Persecution comes because of the exclusivity of Jesus.

READ: Acts 7:54 –
“When they heard these things they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed at him with their teeth.”

DISCUSS: Why does the message that Jesus alone is Lord create opposition? How can followers of Jesus remain faithful when truth is unpopular or resisted?

REVIEW: The response to persecution is trusting God’s sovereignty and praying boldly.

READ: Acts 7:55–56 –
“But he, being full of the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God.”

DISCUSS: What does Stephen’s focus on Jesus teach us about enduring hardship? How does fixing our eyes on Christ change the way we respond to suffering or injustice?

REVIEW: Persecution ultimately advances the Gospel.

READ: Acts 8:1 –
“On that day a great persecution broke out against the church in Jerusalem, and all except the apostles were scattered….”

DISCUSS: How might God use difficult or painful seasons to accomplish purposes we cannot yet see? Where have you seen God bring growth or impact through hardship?

ASK

Where is God inviting you to trust Him more deeply—even in hardship, opposition, or uncertainty?

PRAY

Lord Jesus, help us fix our eyes on You when life is difficult or costly. Give us courage to remain faithful, hearts that forgive like Yours, and confidence that You are sovereign even in suffering. Strengthen our faith so that every trial becomes an opportunity for Your gospel to shine through us. Amen.

INVITATION TO RESPOND

This week, live with confidence in Christ’s final victory:

  • Stand firm in truth: Follow Jesus faithfully even when obedience is uncomfortable.
  • Fix your gaze on Christ: Spend intentional time in prayer when facing stress or opposition.
  • Practice forgiveness: Release resentment and pray for those who oppose or hurt you.
  • Trust God’s purpose: Believe that God can redeem hardship for eternal impact.
  • Live with eternal perspective: Remember that temporary suffering cannot overcome eternal victory in Christ.

Persecution may be temporary—but our victory in Jesus is forever secure.
